Knife crime education is a sensitive but vital part of violence reduction in schools.

In this video, James from OpenView Education shares three key principles behind our evidence-based approach, and why early intervention is crucial in supporting young people to make positive choices for life.

1. Focus on Knowledge, Not Fear

At OpenView Education, we avoid scare tactics. Research shows that fear-based approaches don’t reduce knife carrying and can sometimes make things worse.
Instead, we deliver age-appropriate, informative content that empowers students to understand both the consequences of knife crime and the reality that most young people do not carry knives.

2. Equip Young People with Practical Skills

Providing information isn’t enough, young people need practical skills they can use to stay safe.
Our Positive Choices for Life workshops teach pupils how to:

  • Handle peer pressure

  • Respond if encouraged to carry a knife

  • Seek help for themselves or friends

  • Recognise gang recruitment strategies

In our workshops we use interactive role-play, to help students actively practise these skills, making them far more likely to apply them when it matters.

3. Build Confidence and Community Support

Safe choices are easier when students feel supported.

We work with schools to extend learning beyond the workshop by providing follow-up resources and lesson plans, helping to embed positive choices into the school’s culture.
