For most schools, booking an external anti-bullying workshop comes down to one question: is it worth the spend? Budgets are tighter than ever, and every visitor, resource and training day has to earn its place.
It’s a fair question.
So rather than just tell you it’s worth it, we wanted to lay out what the evidence, the inspection framework and the actual cost per pupil show, so you can make an informed decision for your school.
What Does Ofsted Actually Look For?
Bullying isn’t a side note in an Ofsted inspection. It sits directly inside two of the judgement areas: Behaviour and Attitudes, and Personal Development.
Inspectors expect to see a culture where bullying and peer-on-peer abuse are not tolerated and are dealt with quickly and effectively when they happen. Pupil and staff surveys used during inspection also ask directly about bullying and how safe and supported respondents feel.
On top of this, the Department for Education’s Behaviour in Schools guidance and Keeping Children Safe in Education both require every school to have a clear anti-bullying strategy built into its behaviour policy. RSHE statutory guidance also requires bullying to be taught as part of the curriculum.
A well-planned workshop gives you evidence for all of this in one visit. It’s a documented, whole-school intervention, mapped to your curriculum, that you can point to directly when a governor, parent or inspector asks what you’re doing around Anti-Bullying.
Does It Actually Reduce Bullying?
The honest answer, according to the research, is yes.
The Youth Endowment Fund’s toolkit rates anti-bullying programmes as low cost with a moderate reduction in bullying perpetration, based on a solid base of randomised controlled trials.
A UK-wide trial of the KiVa programme in over 100 primary schools, published in Psychological Medicine in 2024, found bullying victimisation fell from around 21% to 18% in schools running the programme, alongside measurable gains in pupil empathy.
It’s also worth remembering what’s at stake if bullying goes unaddressed.
Research presented to the Royal Economic Society found that pupils who are bullied at school are 10% less likely to get five or more good GCSE passes, and more likely to face unemployment and mental health problems later in life.
A workshop won’t fix everything on its own. But it’s a meaningful contribution to keeping pupils safe supporting a whole-school approach to Anti-Bullying.
What About Staff Time?
This is the part that’s hardest to put a number on. There isn’t published UK research that quantifies the staff hours saved by bringing in an external provider rather than building everything in-house.
But the logic, and what teachers tell us, is straightforward. A ready-made, curriculum-mapped visit means your staff aren’t starting from a blank page.
